For 129 years now, the 4 generation family owned Wedge Nursery has operated out of Albert Lea Minnesota. Raising trees is a challenging and risky business, yet Wedge Nursery has been doing it successfully, and are on track for an even bigger and brighter future. Since 1900 the Nursery has stood on the historic site of the old Itasca Village. Earlier it had been on a 200 acre tract, two miles southeast of Albert Lea known as "Echo Farm".

With technological advancements in the way plants are grown and with new methods of hybridization, the nursery has had to stay current on such changes, keeping up with the plant growing market. Wedge's strongest technology advancement was in the grafting of lilacs on green ash roots that allowed the ash root to act like a nurse root providing moisture and nutrients to the lilac scion allowing it time to produce it's own roots.

Other innoventions included the invention of a box bailer to improve the shipping of plants by Ralph Wedge, as well as being one of the first to invent and use the shaker digger for digging bare root plants. These innovations allowed them to reproduce plants quicker, and in greater numbers.

Showing true historic value and the longevity of their business, it's an interesting fact that Wedge Nursery is the oldest nursery in the state of Minnesota.

Specializing in Lilacs for a long period of time, at one point Wedge Nursery was believed to be the largest grower of lilacs in the country, utilizing an unusual way of grafting lilacs by growing them on their own roots (rather than on privit roots like many nurseries used). Wedge was also well known for their early direct mail catalog business, offering over 140 varieties of lilacs. They also offered a farily large selection of fruit trees in the early 20's through the 30's, as well as evergreens and flowering shrubs. Its sandy loam soil and level ground provided excellent growing conditions for the bare root plants, which was the motivating factor for their relocation.

Recently, Eagles Rest Tree farms purchased Wedge Nursery, forming a cooperation and unification that is sure to benefit both companies, and their long list of clientele for years and years to come.

Eagles Rest enjoys the reputation of being the largest tree farms in this particular region. Our inventory of mature trees is staggering and our state of the art tree transplanting technology has allowed our personal business success to be one we are extremely proud of.
